BOGONG IN ACTION - Mahalo

Some time ago, Sigur Ros repaid the attention they'd earned over the years with a thank-you expressed in Icelandic in the title, “Takk”. Now, instead, there are other musicians thanking us in advance, this time in Hawaiian, with “Mahalo”. But this gratitude is probably aimed at all those thick-skinned enough to withstand one of their live shows or studio recordings.

Indeed, there's nothing exotic or Pacific about the sound here, nor anything folky from the Mediterranean either, since Bogong In Action hail from Taranto and the album is an uncompromising concentrate of brutality and fury.

Their work consists of 8 tracks for 15 and a half minutes of abrasive music, worthy of the most agitated school of Skin Graft, Gravity and Gsl, throwing in the madness of bands like Arab On Radar and Crom Tech for good measure.

This Apulian outfit, which features Gaspare Sammartano, drummer of the horror-obsessed Cannibal Movie, had already made a ferocious impression at showcases dedicated to the less conventional, more experimental side of the Italian alternative scene, such as Rome's No Lebol and Macerata's Only Fucking Labels, tearing apart the ears of those brave and invested enough to show up.

On “Mahalo” the screams teeter on the edge of irretrievable hysteria, accompanied by dry, venomous guitar distortion and a rhythm section that is pure din, all submerged in a muddy sonic saturation. With Bogong In Action there's no escape, not even a shred of purification — here it's all fire and infernal flames. Brutality wins.
