QLUSTER - Antworten

2012 (Bureau b.)
neoclassical
After "Fragen" and "Rufen", "Antworten" closes the Qluster trilogy, the duo formed by the almost eighty-year-old Roedelius and the young Onnen Bock. The album contains a lengthy improvisation recorded in 2007 at the Berlin Philharmonic using only two Steinway pianos.
This new work by the German duo duly exemplifies the pitfalls of improvised music: sometimes you get to hear a truly well-crafted piece (such as "Nachts in Berlin 5", balanced between the slow progress of the low notes and the nervous ticking of the high ones), other times the two pianos seem to follow random, self-contained melodic lines, but for most of the time there's just a lot of mannerism.

Someone like Roedelius could release an album like this every day; the only problem is, he's not Chopin, and in the long run it gets tiresome.
