The first cry under the name Cloak Of Altering, yet another incarnation of the tireless Maurice De Jong, didn't convince me at all, due to a black doom-metal variant that was still fairly raw. With “Ancient Paths Through Timeless Voids” things improve slightly, but not enough to allow a truly decisive leap forward.
Amid lightning-fast cybernetic assaults, electronic beats toughened by industrial deviations, icy Teutonic scans and drone swarms (the title track is emblematic of this formidable yet ultimately fruitless portrayal of evil), what is, all things considered, one of the Dutch artist's least intriguing projects does not forget to throw into the fray those classical-flavored interludes (as in, for instance, “Devoided”) with which elsewhere he has managed to pull absolutely sublime moments out of his hat.
