ROBERT MILES - Thirteen Remixes

After the critical glories of “Thirteen“ Robert Miles is ready to churn out an endless series of remixes and reworkings of his beloved project, aiming to reap success beyond the borders of progressive rock as well.

The predictable but pleasant flashes of insight on “Thirteen” stirred up a storm of praise and wall-to-wall interviews, hailing him as the genius behind the Italian prog revival, but despite repeated attempts I still can't shake my lukewarm verdict on the album, and unfortunately this trio of remixes does nothing to help reassess the work.

Electronics fit for porn movies minus the eroticism, textbook, academic rock-pop citations that make you long for the glorious off-key moments of the excellent Would Be Goods, electronic effects that turn Giorgio Moroder's music into experimental avant-garde, guitar riffs and endless rhythmic breaks that fail to lighten the catharsis of “Antimony,” while the hypnotic remix of “Deep End” just slips by without ever charming us.

Now I await the chorus of praise for his remixing art and the cries decrying my critical incompetence, but what I'm sure of is that Robert Miles is nothing more than a skilled (and perhaps sincere) shapeshifter with no identity of his own.
