MOTORHEAD - The Wörld Is Yours

2011 (Emi)
hard and heavy

It opens with "Born To Loose", and it's like taking a leap back in time of at least thirty years. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Lemmy keeps forging ahead along the trajectory of a hard'n'heavy sound that certainly spawned a whole school of followers, but which today can, at most, speak only to its die-hard faithful.

"The Wörld Is Yours" is the English band's twentieth album (the first dates back to 1976) and sounds exactly as you'd expect, between thick, distorted boogie ("Born To Loose"), punk-rock "epos" ("I Kow How To Die", "I Know What You Need"), sticky choruses popping out of the din ("Get Back In Line", which nonetheless has the swagger of a genuine classic), ever-present "metal" grit ("Outlaw") and the driving "Devils In My Hand", with guitarist Philip Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee perfectly backing up the hoarse voice of the ever-unbreakable Mr. Kilmister, still undiminished by time.

In the end, however adrenaline-fuelled and loaded with raucous pathos, this is still good old rock'n'roll in disguise. They say it loud and clear, with no frills: "Rock 'n' Roll Music", and the increasingly unhinged "Bye Bye Bitch Bye Bye" doesn't beat around the bush either. By now, the Motörhead name is a trademark in itself, so tracks like "Waiting For The Snake" and the darker, almost doom-laden "Brotherhood Of Man" (with all its sense of nausea for a world ever more adrift) keep flying that flag high, without worrying too much about being out of fashion. In the end, there's no point beating around the bush: this is a record with no real weak spots. So saddle up and don't ask too many questions!
