Another piece in a discography that is not always fruitful (if not downright erratic), “Tiny Creture” by Cex is a vehicle for the nearly twenty minutes of “Critterpated”, an intelligent "comic-book" reduction of Klaus Schulze's “Irrlicht”.
It is his most abstract, even erudite, piece to date. The montage of overtones opens with a solemn “toccata” of Chinese-tinged notes and electronic currents straight out of a John Carpenter film. The “fugue” is announced by a breath in the manner of Vangelis, defaced by all manner of digital drones, in a polychromatic switching of harmonic partials. Finally, organ touches and an industrial siren (the most cosmic moment) lead into a disjointed closing elegy.
Often brutal and raw, the piece is shaped and driven by the overtones, whose drastic shifts generate harmony, atmosphere and volume. The rest of the album (his thirteenth, but the first to mark a return to Tigerbeat6 after almost a decade) is sadly stuck in parody of itself (Rijan Kidwell, a native of Baltimore, helped by his wife) or of others.
