ALL PIGS MUST DIE - God Is War

2011 (Southern lord)
hardcore, post-core, sludge

Power and ferocity: these two coordinates alone might be enough to sum up the All Pigs Must Die experience, a American quartet produced by the ever-present Kurt Ballou, once again capable of delivering a sound that is both weighty and brutally raw.

"God Is War" doesn't mince words, scraping the explosive barrel of hardcore and injecting massive doses of metallic extremism, until it revels in effective post-core grandiosity that tries to break through the wall of sound. So, starting with "Death Dealer", the band grinds out explosive assaults and sudden breaks, besieged by the furious screams of Kevin Baker, ready to pulverize rage into old-school torpedoes ("Pulverization") or to embrace sharp, blazing dynamics ("Sacrosanct"). In short, no beating around the bush, and plenty of malice, in a perpetual seething of spasmodic chords, extremely powerful bass lines and rhythmic structures as solid as they are versatile.

There's nothing new under the sun, although the band comes across as extremely sincere in its act of self-flagellation. In short, with a little effort, you can even make do. Reacting to the absence of any metaphysical absolute, All Pigs Must Die try to push past the limits of their own despair with suffocating torrents of noise (the title track), devastation at full speed ("The Blessed Void", "Third World Genocide", "Extinction Is Ours") and lengthy dissertations on pain ("Sadistic Vindicator").

Then, certainly, the longer it goes on, the more unbearable the sensation becomes of hearing just a couple of ideas repeated to the point of agony. But, as the saying goes, you can't have everything in life. So, take it or leave it. And if the first option appeals to you, try to restrain yourselves, because the urge to smash everything to pieces might take over.
