LE ROSE - Le Rose

2010 (Pippola music)
synth-pop

Born from a chance encounter at the foot of the Colosseum, the Roman duo Le Rose aims straight at the hearts of today's nostalgics for the most colorful, kitsch and pulsating decade of the last century. Indeed, what certainly unites Flavio Scutti and Andrea Noce most is an unbridled passion for everything that defined the Italian synth-pop imagination of the fabulous Eighties. And so, Matia Bazar, Diana Est, the Luca Carboni of night buses and Dustin Hoffman, the usual Battiato and even the unforgotten Soerba (how much could a "Schumann" bring them to mind?) are among the many reference points to aim for, without too much beating around the bush or scattering of adjectives, to best describe the self-titled debut of this intriguing duo, yet another fine product from the Pippola stable.

It's a shape-shifting kaleidoscope of retro projections immersed in full electronic climax, oozing rogue nostalgia ("Automobilista"), captivating synth-pop arrangements set within a melancholic and romantic context; direct, essential lyrics, full of memories (self-referential?) and sharp quotes ("Non posso più fermarmi, non serve più dormire, ma è strano che di notte mi viene in mente un film con Monica Vitti"), hypnotic keyboard rotations à-la Mauro Sabbione ("Meteo"), provocations worthy of a perfect chanteuse ("Mi dice si"), and moving, booming interplay between synth and piano ("Storia di ragazzi").

"Le Rose" is a charming declaration of love addressed to a slice of sounds and musical styles from our country's recent past, through which vocal styles and atmospheres never lost from our memory come back to life. It's a record dedicated to all those who love wallowing in memories and in the jukeboxes of the Wonderful Ones. Everyone else is kindly asked to keep their distance.
