The Detroit outfit Outrageous Cherry continue undaunted on their quest for the perfect melodic vibration. On the scene for well over fifteen years now, the crew led by visionary Matthew Smith keeps churning out vintage songbooks of restrained, psychedelic freak-pop, always living in the long, imposing shadow of the golden rules of Sixties songwriting (a shadow against which their entire catalogue can seem like one vast exercise in admiration).

Much like kindred outfits working the other side of the Atlantic such as Bees, Coral, Kula Shaker or Zutons, Outrageous Cherry too indulge in the passionate art of sonic modelling, filing and painting with the finest nibs and infinite patience the psychedelic uniforms of little songs to be savoured through the aching lens of memory, like virtuoso reproductions of Jerry & The Peacemakers, Kinks and Small Faces (just listen to "My Ghetto" or "I Like It").

Nothing memorable, nothing we didn't already know all too well, and yet there's no denying a certain listening pleasure even in this mannerist philology, which leads the band to sound less like an actual band than like the dream of a crew of compulsive first-pressing vinyl hunters. Passive rock, one might almost say, if that weren't already an unforgivable oxymoron.
