Una delle migliori uscite della Thrill Jockey targate 2010 è "High Places vs Mankind", il secondo album firmato da Mary Pearson e Rob Barber. Vengono da Brooklyn e due anni fa hanno stupito con un esordio che sembrava la versione lo-fi dei Golden Palominos. Il nuovo disco è ancora più messo a fuoco: un passo in direzione di una forma canzone che in più di un'occasione ricorda i Laika ("She's A Wild Rose", "Constant Winter"). Meno sperimentazione ma più melodia. Sebbene gli intarsi di basso e batteria continuino a essere il motore propulsore sui quali la voce suadente della Pearson stende le sue liriche. Irresistibile il ritmo trascinante di "On Giving Up". Se David Byrne non fosse entrato in andropausa vent'anni fa se ne innamorerebbe all'istante.
