cosmic

by Francesco Nunziata

A new CD-R from Golden Retriever, who only a few months ago released a self-titled work built from delicate ambient-drone textures embellished by the languid, elusive sound of bass clarinet. Matt Carlson and Jonathan Sielaff continue down that same path on this “2”, split into two lengthy compositions. The cosmic strain now takes over, unfolding in much more expansive arcs. On “Part 1”, clarinet and synth intertwine endlessly, ultimately dissolving into a hazy succession of puffs, gaseous frequencies, liquefied melodies and sacral suspense. More subdued, “Part 2” settles into an astral flow, focusing on the pursuit of an iridescent hypnosis. Pleasant and relaxing, “2” keeps attention on the Portland duo alive, in the hope that something truly significant will eventually arrive.
