Jazz-rock, and the heavy, fuzzed-out kind at that. A no-frills mix of Hammond, e-piano, seriously pumped-up bass and lo-fi drums – the essential basement-show touch needed to make an essentially prog record, and a rather anachronistic one at that, palatable to an indie audience. There are some great muscular grooves, some fine psych/dark moments somewhere between Hawkwind and Amon Düül; the best moments, however, come when the impro flow heads down the oblique paths of Soft Machine's “Third” and scatters it into dark, magmatic rarefactions, a hair's breadth from Supersilent.
The second album by Norway's Elephant9, “Walk The Nile” is rarely a thrilling listen, but it's undoubtedly engaging. And pleasantly retro.
