Sono passati sei anni dalla precedente collaborazione tra il chitarrista tedesco Markus Reuter e il musicista inglese Ian Boddy. Dieci dal loro primo incontro discografico, “Distant Rituals”. “Dervish” è già il terzo lavoro che i due amici musicisti registrano assieme e suona come un capitolo completamente nuovo della loro carriera musicale. Merito anche degli ospiti che suonano su “Dervish”: Pat Mastellotto dei King Crimson su ben quattro brani; Ulrich Pollmann e la cantante SiRenée su altri due, e un quartetto d’archi viene utilizzato su tre delle migliori composizioni dell’album – il funk astratto della stessa “Dervish”, la danza gitana di “Joker” e l’odissea scurissima di “Angst”. Chiude il disco la lunghissima “Spiral Manoeuvre” con i suoi undici minuti di sibili spettrali.
