Improvised sounds with complex texture for this debut effort from Haptic, a Chicago trio led by Steven Hess, already known for his work with Pan American and, in ON, with Sylvain Chauveau.
The album is split into two long suites where the sounds of 90s electronic music recur, the kind made by experimenters like Pan Sonic, Radian, Alva Noto, Ryoji Ikeda, but here bolstered by a doom framework that recalls the best of Oren Ambarchi. The first track runs about twenty minutes and slips by through frequency modulations gone haywire, imploding, seeming on the verge of exploding. All around it is a random flow of glitches, aborted melodies, shifting timbres and ambient fog in perpetual dissolve.
The second track, on the other hand, is a succession of ambient rarefactions, in a sound that resembles dust particles floating in the ether after the disaster.
Not bad.
