GOOSE - 30:40

A band from Sassari with a strong melodic sensibility, Goose (initially known as Mama Goose from '98 onward, and authors of one album, "Uomini e tordi") put together, after a long run of live activity, between 2004 and 2006, their first single "Domenica d'estate" (complete with video) and their first full album, "Tutto come allora", on which they excel with the lengthy "Ozioso", the suspended "Forse" (with a very lyrical use of the Rhodes), and the catchy "Bar".

"30:40" simply carries the discourse forward with a light touch, without settling for a mere carbon copy, aware of a personality that is still taking shape.

Somewhere between power-pop and crepuscular moods ("Finché non saprai", "Qui per te", "Settembre" and "Fra noi due"), Goose indulge in the carefree country of "La vita a 34 anni", in the acoustic, classicizing Rem harmonies of "Quando ero felice" and "Indietro", in the serenade of "Mio cuore", in the ballad of "Per cambiare", right up to a more distinctly songwriterly dimension, as much Dylan-esque in "Sogna" as it is Drake-esque (and orchestral) in "Neve".

Cleanly crafted, yet as ordinary as a morning alarm clock, so drenched in polish that it makes you forget the irrelevant lyrics, and marked by an essential, spare approach to the arrangements, all pitched in the key of lightweight little poems, it bears a tennis-themed title that imagines life – hardly the news of the millennium – as a match. To recap, the standout tracks that justify the purchase are: “La vita a 34 anni”, “Neve” and “Sogna”. “Settembre” is actually an (adapted) tribute to Big Star and Alex Chilton.
