WILDILDLIFE - Peas Feast

2008 (Chicas de hoy)
art-rock

For now it's only a cd-r, but "Peas Feast" should, sooner or later, become a vinyl release. Either way, these four new tracks represent, for Wildildlife (one of the true, great revelations of 2007), a moment of transition, a pause for reflection ahead of putting the finishing touches on the material we'll find – hopefully soon – on their next album.

Nothing groundbreaking here, since the tracks move more or less along the same lines as "Six", swallowing and spitting out, step by step, psychedelia, doom, traces of stoner, noise, all delivered with that artsy swagger that clashes a little with their crazed verve. The fact remains that the opening "White Eyelidz" shows just how much the San Francisco trio is still capable of surprising us, delivering yet another prime example of this psychotically unbalanced and dazed non-genre.

From the garage-rooted chaos of the first part to the sludgy emptiness of the second, "White Eyelidz" is, in fact, an entire mental stage of acid, dark sonorities (stuff from inaccessible undergrounds, basically), with the dazed, hypnotic voice gliding over reverberating, stunned chords, while the music solemnly goes into orbit, rolling its eyes under the effect of every drug on earth…

More orderly and chained to the ground, "Violent" slips by filthy and doomy, intoning a sort of degraded pagan prayer, between abysses stared straight in the eye, incendiary peaks pushed to the limits of endurance, with a tail that leads directly back to that of "Magic Jordan", surrendering in ecstasy, if only briefly, before itself.

The wildest side of the bunch, on the other hand, surfaces with the noise-garage of "The Shining Son": a screamo, wound-up voice, concentric circles of distorted flames, knife-point assaults. So much so that, in the end, the desolate fanfare of "My Song" appears perfect and blessed, its desperate, murderous choral sound burning with passion and feeding on the most venomous sarcasm, rotting away slowly too, as befits a band with blood-shot eyes…

Stay tuned, because there's more great stuff still to come!
