Some time ago we discussed Hungry Eye Records, the American label devoted to dark-leaning sounds, which has been behind some of the most interesting releases in this field in recent times. While we wait for a new album from Weegs, who according to Daniel Skibra (the label boss) seem to be a bit in standby mode while they figure out what to do next, we console ourselves with this fine Ep from California's Mt Sims. It's a project that's hardly wet behind the ears, given that the band's frontman, Matt Sims, already has two albums ("Ultra Sex" and "Wild Light") under his belt, released on Dj Hell's prestigious International Gigolo.
So what do Mt Sims actually do? Let's just say they operate in the darkest corners of electroclash - after all, collaborations with David J, Cross-over, and support slots for Ladytron speak for themselves on that front. "A Grave" is an Ep of four highly commendable tracks that bring out the best of the genre: methodical precision, rhythm, and that glam aftertaste straight out of a glossy 80s magazine. So while "A Grave" and "Unwound" really do recall Ladytron, "Melting The Ice" calls to mind the best of Absolute Body Control, though the reference points could be manifold.
For fans of the 80s and synth-pop as it once was.
P.S. The Ep has a total pressing of 1000 copies and precedes the album "Happily Ever After".
