Lebowski are a band from Jesi (Ancona) made up of Simone Re, Riccardo Franconi (already in Butcher Mind Collapse), Marco Mancini and Riccardo Latini. After a preparatory Ep, the band arrives at the album, “The Best Love Songs Of The Love For The Songs And The Best”, a notable example of all-Italian creative new wave revival.
After a thunderous opener that quotes Gang Of Four, the band settles into the dissonant gait of “Berto 131”, with the typical lasciviousness of Liars and crumbling, clownish, nerve-fraying backdrops, almost an inane parody of Joy Division. Then “St-N-N-N-“ harks back to the best Gaznevada, “Alberigo Evaniscente” wallows in a crazed non-song patched together with accordion forays in the style of B52's, and “Church Of Fonz” is a post-punk nursery rhyme for synth.
The highlight of the short album comes in the two imaginative tracks “Zubber Buller” and “Didier e il suo cesto di droga”. “Zubber Buller” is a pastiche of multiple spoken-word readings layered over the demonic pulse of the rhythm section, and the relentless push of wah-wah distortion pedals and electronics. “Didier e il suo cesto di droga” is another babel built around a recited poem that would embarrass Offlaga Disco Pax, surrounded by dark-wave guitars and electro cliches, a splatter saraband of black implosions, multiplied chatter, satanic narrations played in reverse, death rattles, screams and shrieks of every kind.
A murky blend made up of equal parts demented, yet also transcendental, linguistic puzzles, and a cynicism too brazen to call merely brazen (or not brazen enough, take your pick). An equivocal record, once again co-produced (Valvolare Records, Bloody Sound Factory, Stonature Records, Lemmings Records) and built around an unprecedented line-up (Simone Re's voice, guitar and keyboard versus the "everything else" of the others), in which the singer is a deviant master of ceremonies, the guitars gloat and splutter, the arrangements are static and mutant at the same time, and the drums carry on as if nothing were happening. Noble.
