BIRDS OF MAYA - Vol. 1

2008 (Holy Mountain)
hard-rock, lo-fi blues

This Birds Of Maya record is terrible, and it pains me to say it, since Holy Mountain usually turns out releases that are at least decent. Vol. 1 runs to seven songs, seven, torn between lo-fi garage and hard rock. It's a badly botched mix that drags on without any purpose, somewhere between old-school guitar solos and pounding, monotonous rhythms (in the worst sense of the word).

It sounds like an anaemic Hendrix or a battered recording of Cream. The low-fidelity “production”, moreover, makes the whole thing tremendously surreal, burying each individual component of the mix with “absolute mastery”.

The tracks run from three to seven minutes and, honestly, they are an unbearable ordeal. Zero imagination, utterly flat sounds, boredom by the truckload. In short, steer well clear of this mess.

Oh, wait, I almost forgot. The press release reads: “It's been said that Volume One is possibly the best rock release to come out of Philadelphia ever”. Whoever said that is either deaf, being ironic, or has had their brain pickled.
