Acheloo is the project through which Rome-based Carlo Luzi pursues his passion for ambient-electronic music, after having been part, in the 1980s, of the duo Terra della Sera, alongside Paolo De Gregori.
Self-released, this “Sirens” gives us back a genuine passion, naturally well disposed to embrace the great emanations of the “cosmic couriers”, even if certain more liquid and impalpable sonorities call directly into question Stars Of The Lid, especially in the use of “treated” guitar sounds (as is the case, for instance, in the long inner journey of “Raidne” or the beautiful, melancholy “Melody of Darka”).
Divided into seven tracks, this is, then, a work that deserves some attention, not least for the care with which Luzi manages to balance the various sonic shades, always able to weave soundscapes poised between evanescence and transcendence, between boundless spaces and a sense of perilous emptiness (“Ligea”), drawing close to the murky, mysterious visions of Tangerine Dream with natural devotion, but also with a personality of real substance, managing to pull off “melodic” variations capable of carrying us further, toward strange, ambiguous galaxies (“Deianira”).
And while in “Teles” the tones turn overtly sinister, so much so that it feels like crossing a cosmic forest made of unknown symbols, in the title track the sirens' song dissolves into galactic labyrinths, with synthetic tolling worthy of a horror film. But perhaps it is in the devout, dazzling religious contemplation of “The Bride Of Taar” that the desire for a universalist embrace is best fulfilled, with its hushed prayer and its boundless yearning to be extinguished in the dark.
