6MAJIK9 - Your Friends Are A Photograph Of Your Future

2007 (Sloow tapes)
impro-noise, weird-folk

The distant, mysterious Australia always has some well-kept secret. One of these is 6majik9, who have the usual myriad of tapes and CD-Rs to their name, stuff that's more or less interesting, chaotic, senseless and so on. In short, we're in standard "weird-shit music" territory, though I must admit that this "Your Friends Are A Photograph Of Your Future" possesses an unexpected charm, so trying to drag them out of the underground a little seems more than fitting.

Cave folk, impro-noise and fourth-hand "jam session": quite a mix, really. The journey, according to the tracklist, runs in reverse. Here a senseless paradise, there the hell that awaits us. And this paradise is a fine primordial broth of scattered thoughts, of sound-events adrift: Temple Of Bon Matin after the catastrophe, terminally ill ("Heaven"). An air of putrid ritualism ("The Ants Are In Jenny's Sis"), against a backdrop of toxic dusks ("Beyond The Portals, He's Waiting"). Wrecked, aimless wanderers play with reverbs and layers, immersed in a radioactive world teeming with the last vital tremors – tremors behind which you'd never expect to trace the dark machinations of fallen deities! And yet... ("You're Burning My Face").

6majik9 is the beauty of disorder for disorder's sake, perhaps even with a bit of beginner's electronics thrown in ("Not The Towers"). A beauty that calls for rebellious machines, now gone haywire ("Jason Diamond's"); for objects devoted to a destabilizing, anti-academic, rascally and ritualistically martial symphonism ("Fiancèe"); capable, too, of laying the groundwork for the anti-advent, for the bad news (the space-raga exhalation of "Hell", an endless bridge suspended in a void charged with malevolence).

6majik9 is, in short, one more reason not to be ashamed of your own little psychological disturbances.
