JORDAN FIELDS - 2084

2006 (Rice + smooth)
house

Jordan Fields isn't one of the biggest names in the wider clubbing world, or at least he's not among the most acclaimed and celebrated producers; but he's certainly one of those with the longest history behind his productions and his personal story: born in Chicago, he got involved early on in the break-dance and DJing scene during the glorious 80s (especially glorious for the city on the lake), before establishing himself as a producer with his first EP, "The Thrillseekers", kicking off a career that, while it never brought him to the peaks of personal success, has left us with a highly personal style very attentive to groove.

On this "2084", his first release in four years since his last work, Jordan Fields draws on all his experience to hand us a small house gem. Fields' style is an enveloping one, aiming to draw the dancefloor into the sinuous funk rhythms and influences of early Chicago, while still winking at more modern, fresher solutions that breathe new life into a strand many consider all but extinct by now.

From the opener "Orangina On The Rocks", where Detroit influences, lounge textures and funk appeal give rise to a fizzy track in which trumpet inserts in perfect jazz style and elegant breaks sketch out an explosive groove, it's already clear this will be a record capable of striking straight at the heart of nostalgics for house sound of old. But with "Keep On Movin" and "The Chase", Jordan Fields also treats us to more dancefloor-oriented tracks, where a solid Chicago-house foundation blends with synths halfway between the poppiest '80s and today's more minimal sounds; textures that clearly show a French Touch influence, with a touch of vocoder to delight even the most demanding palates. With "Passion, Love, Desire", "Get Buzy On The 1" and "Nu York Afterdark", instead, we're catapulted into three decidedly deeper tracks, where bass and synths create atmospheres halfway between lounge and dancefloor, in a riot of piano and vintage textures that lend that touch of class which is the trademark of all of Fields' work.

But the American producer also wants us to have fun before the night gets going, and to that end he wraps us in substantial productions that partly rework pieces by well-known names from the jazz scene. "Bluechip Lounge Mix" (a rework of a Chick Corea piece) takes the original arrangement and adapts it to a modern climate packed with deep bass: a rhythm halfway between electro and funk that gives real bite to Corea's piece. Also excellent is the work on the closing track, titled "Convoy", which reworks a Miles Davis piece in a downtempo key with some fine personal touches. The rest ("A Rainbow Dub", "Heaven", "Nu Copa Dub" and "Why Must I Ask You Why") are tracks that stand out more for their compositional skill and interesting collaborations ("Why Must I Ask You Why" features Colette) than for their beauty in itself... Very nice lounge music, yes, but unlikely to leave much of a mark.

This "2084" is an interesting record that manages the difficult task of reviving the glories of classic house without making it sound so dated; it only partly succeeds, though, losing itself in a few filler tracks that noticeably drag down the overall quality of the record.
