Nel 2004, lasciatosi alle spalle l’esperienza con il collettivo dei Jurassic 5, il mago del giradischi e del mixer Lucas MacFadde, in arte Cut Chemist, iniziò a lavorare al suo primo disco solista, che doveva tirare un po’ le somme dopo una serie di Ep, Dj mix e collaborazioni varie.

Nelle dodici tracce che compongono “The Audience’s Listening”, il dj e produttore losangelino dà libero sfogo a un flusso di fantasie sonore che ingoiano e rigurgitano breakbeat, funk, country (“Motivational Speaker”), bossanova, beat stentorei e chitarrine simil-hawaiane (“The Garden”), cut-up e manipolazioni vocali con pianoforte jazz come mascotte (“Spat”), beat & rhymes cuciti con (im-)perizia (“What’s The Altitude”, “Storm”, “The Audience is Listening Theme Song”) e numeri dance sbilenchi approntati pensando allo space-age pop (“Metrorail Thru Space”).

In “2266 Cambridge”, numerosi sono i sample che si passano il testimone a margine di un divertissement d’impronta blues. “A Peak In Time” e “Spoon” hanno invece un piglio rock: il secondo direi, anzi, vagamente kraut-rock (forse il Nostro aveva in mente l’omonimo brano dei Can?).

Un disco intelligente e divertentissimo.
