Techno is dead, long live techno!
This, in a nutshell,
is "Raw", the album with which renowned Dutch producer Miss Djax makes her return to the
scene after a difficult period on a personal level, a record that stands out
amid a multitude of releases that do little more than pallidly rehash what
was once one of the most revolutionary genres of the postwar era. While everything around
her changes – techno dies and is reborn in other forms – the Dutch artist,
like a monolith, coherently carries on her own path and returns to her roots with
a class that only someone who has literally made history can possess.
After
the delightful intro "Time 2 Play", somewhere between cartoonish and festive,
Djax catapults us into her rigorous yet extreme style, resolute, at times bordering
on delirium.
From the devastating power of “Twisted” to the animalistic synths of
“Sick of U” (doubled at the end with a remix by the well-known American producer
DJ Rush, who adds even more bite to a track that's already a killer) or
“Techniek Stad”, passing through monumental tracks of pure kick drum and synthetic
distortion, like “Crack House” and “Club Hammer”, Miss ventures into industrial
digressions such as “My Mind”, “Detained” and “Choke 666”, right up to the acid splash
of “Brain Candy”, where the Dutch producer lets the sequencer unleash
the primal fury of a genre that's now defunct, yet still occasionally lands
a solid, decisive kick.
