FLIM - Holiday Diary

2005 (Plinkity plonk)
indietronica

The usual playful, carefree, rambling spirit. Tiny childlike scores for small, secluded days. A sweet, gentle digital flavor, as delicate as a freshly bloomed flower, wet with flavorful dew. After the shimmering, amateurishly beautiful little gems named "Give You Nothing" and "Helio" (released on Tomlab), our favorite indie-tronic wizard returns with another burst of colorful magic. "Murmur Room" is the repetition of the same acoustic guitar chord, set against a backdrop of delicate, frothy synths, crackling little noises, microscopic touches of some mysterious instrument. Sonic abstractions for winged sprites, drawn in dazzling colors and delicious flavors.

"Lime" is a limping sketch into which a withdrawn spirit flows, tormented by rough, irregular, drawn-out timbres. A kind of prepared piano paints a dark sky, while various acoustic instruments add detail, in a cyclical repetition of small flashes of disturbing power. Hints of noise, gentle relaxing pauses, the expanse of a boundless landscape. "Current Description" is a proto-ambient piece, streaked with noisy disturbances, sinuous and sinusoidal drones, creeping and slippery, schizophrenic and elusive. Peace and dreamlike pathos. Aleatory notes for dark, fetid rooms.

"Above Seagullis" takes a more rhythmic approach. A percussive whirlwind is stable and precious, with fluttering counterpoints of harmonica, synth, piano, and electro(sonic) spasms as tiny as an atom. A sonic carpet for solitary moments, in front of a fire, music to be jealously kept for oneself. "Home" is a masterpiece. Seemingly just a simple piano climb, it hides genius in its corners. The piano's sonic tail is looped, creating a disorienting effect in which timbral scales collide with the obsessive effects of a machine engineered to destabilize. Beautiful to the point of pain. "No Guitar Please" is a thrilling little game. A harmonica played atop a boundless mountain, counterpoints of a skipping accordion, pauses that render the surrounding space static. Smiles and love. Sighs and heartbeats. A slightly cloudy day, a meadow soaked by a forgotten rain, a group of arcane beings leaving to silence an orgy of soothing, sprawling, relaxing sounds. "Ecstatic Brown" is the logical conclusion of (yet another) sparkling work. Winds from an unknown world, tangible touches of a demon gone mad, a grand piano often leaving precise chimes, the flow slow and prolonged, everything gradually dissolving into a sea of sweetness.

Close your eyes and enjoy these moments as if they were infinitely present. Hope for the absence of an ending that always arrives punctually and unwelcome. Thank you, Enrico Wuttke, we love you.
