The Captains Of Industry website has a distinctly '77 look about it, so much so that it feels like stepping into the world of Sniffin' Glue and its ilk. Unpretentious music, punk through and through, is what An Emergency deliver, but it's an evolved strain of punk that draws as much from funk as from (post-)hardcore. Let's say it straight away: "We Are Octagonists" is a breezy, fun record, twisted and distorted just enough, and although there's a lot, pretty much everything, that's already been heard before, it still manages to hold your attention well enough.
The band comes out swinging from start to finish, stringing together a series of tracks that are hard to tell apart, even though if you look hard enough you can find a decent anthem or two, like the blistering "Kevin Bacon," with emo jagged edges that will sound familiar to anyone well acquainted with the Dischord sound. The opening "Terror" is also a good listen, with guitar tones that reek of post-punk scrap metal, and then, without so much as a moment's pause for breath, the following "Iron Nein Danke," anemic and perpetually on the verge of exploding, before repeatedly veering into pop dynamics.
Well, there's no need to describe the rest of the tracks, since if you've heard one, you've heard them all. It's not a record I'd ever buy, but this An Emergency is the epitome of the hard-assed band playing for kicks, and with some savvy marketing behind them they could easily win over plenty of "alternative" music listeners. Wanna bet?
