Joseph Arthur come colonna sonora di uno spot televisivo?! Ebbene sì, a quanto pare anche questo è possibile, visto che la splendida “In the sun”, tratta dal precedente album del songwriter di Akron, è stata recentemente utilizzata per la pubblicità di un profumo…

Certo, è difficile immaginare l’ombroso e introverso Joseph come una futura popstar… Sta di fatto, però, che “Redemption’s son” rappresenta effettivamente il capitolo dalla attitudine più “pop” della discografia dell’artista scoperto da Peter Gabriel, che giunge oggi a siglare il proprio terzo album.

Pop nell’accezione più nobile del termine, ovviamente, nel senso di un’inconfondibile sensibilità nel trovare la via più semplice (ma non necessariamente facile…) per arrivare all’essenza. Ogni nota di “Redemption’s son”, infatti, cela dietro al velo della propria apparente semplicità, che rimanda alle atmosfere dell’album di debutto “Big city secrets”, un profondo lavoro di cesello, che dilata le intuizioni di partenze in una stratificazione di generi tutta da scoprire.

L’asciutto rigore folk-rock del precedente “Come to where I’m from”, che pure rimane probabilmente il capolavoro di Joseph Arthur per la sua straordinaria intensità, lascia così spazio a un intreccio di suoni che, dalle vibranti divagazioni psichedeliche di “Nation of slaves”, giunge sino agli accenti funky di “Buy a bag”, passando attraverso i preziosi intarsi acustici e sintetici che avvolgono la lunga “Termite song”.

Il cuore del disco, tuttavia, è rappresentato da suadenti ballate come “Honey and the moon”, “September baby”, “Favorite girl”, “You are the dark” e “You’ve been loved”, con i loro versi densi di vivide immagini di malinconia e di trepidante attesa, oltre che dalla freschezza di pop-song quali “In the night” e, nella versione americana del disco, “Let’s embrace” e “Dear lord”.

Una complessità musicale che emerge ancora più vividamente dall’ascolto degli altri due lavori pubblicati da Joseph Arthur quasi contestualmente all’uscita del nuovo disco, vale a dire i quattro Ep “Junkyard hearts”, che accentuano la ricerca di sonorità elettroniche verso orizzonti dalle tinte cupe, e l’album della band Holding The Void, nel quale il songwriter americano lascia viceversa libertà alla sua vena più aggressiva e diretta.

Ma vera protagonista della scena è la voce di Joseph Arthur, affascinante incrocio tra Leonard Cohen e Jeff Buckley, che si avventura con lo stesso trasporto in delicati falsetti (“Innocent world”) o in asperità rock (“Permission”).

L’unico limite dell’album è forse l’eccessiva lunghezza (oltre 70 minuti) e la quantità di idee che vi sono concentrate, che richiedono un ascolto attento a cogliere i molteplici livelli di lettura del disco, senza perdersi in alcune momentanee sfilacciature. In ogni caso, uno dei lavori più brillanti del 2002, da collocare sullo scaffale accanto alle dolenti melodie di “Sea Change” di Beck.
