The chart of the 10 best-selling albums of all time in the UK

23-07-2026

Thirty years after its release, “(What's The Story) Morning Glory?” by Oasis adds yet another accolade to its history. To mark the 70th anniversary of the Official Albums Chart, the Official Charts Company has certified the Manchester band's second album as the best-selling studio album of all time in the UK.
The chart, compiled from physical and digital sales as well as streaming data, places “(What's The Story) Morning Glory?” third overall among the best-selling albums in British history. Only two compilations rank ahead of the Oasis masterpiece: Queen's “Greatest Hits” and ABBA's “Gold: Greatest Hits”. That makes it the highest-placed studio album in the overall rankings, a result that confirms the extraordinary impact of the record released in 1995. The band's debut, “Definitely Maybe” (1994), also features in the chart, coming in at number 39.

The announcement came on 22 July, the day the Official Albums Chart marks its seventieth anniversary. Becca Monahan and Chris Austin, interim Co-Managing Directors of the Official Charts Company, commented: “Congratulations to Oasis, as the incomparable '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' is officially crowned the greatest studio album of all time in the UK. Thirty years on, its reach and influence remain extraordinary: a landmark record for British music that continues to unite generations, fill stadiums and soundtrack people's lives.”
The two executives also stressed that the 70th anniversary of the Official Albums Chart represents “a unique opportunity to honour the lasting place the album holds in the heart of music culture.” They added: “The way fans discover and enjoy music may keep changing, but the album remains the ultimate expression of an artist's creativity, ambition and vision. For seven decades, the chart has captured the records that have captured the public's imagination, making the achievements of every artist on this list a fitting focal point for this major anniversary.”
