Record Store Day returns to celebrate Black Friday on Friday, November 27, with a new wave of limited-edition releases bound for independent record shops. As per tradition, the catalogue brings together reissues, archival live recordings, demos, picture discs, commemorative editions and collector's oddities, spanning more than half a century of rock.
Italian availability, however, remains to be confirmed title by title. Record Store Day Italy has in fact announced that it will not be directly following the Black Friday edition, due to the limited number of releases officially distributed in our country. Some international releases may still turn up in Italian shops: to find out which ones, it will be necessary to check with individual retailers.
Among the biggest names of the 2026 edition are Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Doors, Rolling Stones, Motörhead, Ramones, Genesis, George Harrison, Billy Idol, King Crimson, Jefferson Airplane, Kreator, Mötley Crüe and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. But the main attraction, more than the simple colored reissues, is once again the archival material.
Springsteen on New Year's Eve 1975
One of the most eagerly awaited releases is "Live at Tower Theater Philly 1975" by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, available on 4LP and 2CD. The album fully documents the 18-song concert held on New Year's Eve 1975 at the Tower Theater, in the Philadelphia area.
It captures Springsteen at one of the decisive turning points of his career. "Born To Run" had come out just a few months earlier, and the album's success was by then turning the New Jersey singer-songwriter and the E Street Band into one of the most formidable live machines in American rock. That night's setlist included "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out", "Backstreets", "Jungleland", "Thunder Road", "Born to Run" and "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)", right through to the unleashed "Twist and Shout" and "Quarter to Three" in the finale.
The concert was already known to collectors through unofficial recordings, but the Record Store Day edition allows it to be heard in full and in official form. With 14,500 copies announced, it will also be one of the widest-pressed releases of the entire Black Friday lineup.
The Doors go back to 1966, Motörhead to 1984
Equally interesting is the journey back to the origins of The Doors. "1966" in fact recovers material linked to the sessions held at Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles on August 29 of that year, when Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore were working on their debut album. That debut would hit shops in January 1967, immediately establishing an unmistakable formula in which blues, psychedelia, poetry and Manzarek's organ coexisted in a thoroughly personal balance. These recordings thus offer a chance to return to the moment when that language was still being defined. The edition is announced at 7,000 copies.
From the Sixties we jump to 1984 with Motörhead and "The Lost Tapes Vol. 8: Live at Margate", the latest chapter in the series dedicated to Lemmy's band's live archives. The double vinyl recovers the concert from November 5, 1984, at the Winter Gardens in Margate.
Stones, Ramones, Sabbath and archival rediscoveries
For the Rolling Stones, meanwhile, "Aftermath (US)" returns, the American version of the 1966 album that marked a fundamental step in the band's compositional emancipation: it was in fact the first Stones LP made up entirely of songs credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The new edition, limited to 6,500 copies, is planned on 180-gram clear vinyl, with analogue mastering from the original stereo sources and an exclusive lithographic print.
The Ramones, meanwhile, reopen the archives of "Subterranean Jungle" with "Subterranean Jungle Demos", dedicated to the preparatory recordings for the 1983 album. A document of a less celebrated phase of their history, coming after the production shift of "End of the Century" and marked by growing internal instability.
Among the commemorative reissues, several anniversaries stand out. Kreator celebrate the fortieth anniversary of "Pleasure to Kill", Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band the fiftieth anniversary of "Night Moves", Cursive the twentieth anniversary of "Happy Hollow" and the Dead Milkmen the fortieth anniversary of "Eat Your Paisley!". For the sixtieth anniversary of Jefferson Airplane's debut, meanwhile, "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off" arrives in an expanded version with nine bonus tracks, on vinyl for the first time and released as a double marbled-blue LP.
From King Crimson to Billy Idol: the other live releases
The live-recordings chapter is particularly rich. Billy Idol revisits the early stage of his solo career with "Live From The Roxy 1982", while King Crimson release "1974 Massey Hall, Toronto", a double LP dedicated to one of the most incandescent seasons of the band led by Robert Fripp.
Skid Row, meanwhile, go back to the Moscow Music Peace Festival with "Live At The Moscow Music Peace Festival", released as a 12" picture disc, while Staind celebrate "Break the Cycle" with "Break The Cycle (25th Anniversary Live)". Hootie & The Blowfish revisit their "MTV Unplugged", and Grateful Dead offer up the monumental quadruple-vinyl "Carousel Ballroom, San Francisco, CA, 2/14/68 (Live)".
The selection announced by Legacy Recordings widens the spectrum even further. "Billy Joel Tonight" brings to double vinyl Billy Joel's performance from December 5, 1976, at Connecticut College, originally recorded for his first TV special and now reconstructed from the multitrack tapes. Also arriving are "Bill Withers In Concert Live at the BBC, 1974", available physically on LP and CD for the first time, "Copenhagen Live 1969" by Miles Davis, featuring the celebrated "Lost Quintet" with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, and "3121 Las Vegas Live" by Prince, a document of the concert from January 20, 2007, during the "Per4ming Live @ 3121 Las Vegas" residency.
George Harrison, Genesis and collector's oddities
There's no shortage of releases aimed chiefly at the collectors' market. George Harrison's "George Harrison" and "Thirty Three & 1/3" are reissued in zoetrope editions, while Genesis entrust "Land of Confusion" to a 12" picture disc. Joan Jett & The Blackhearts release "I Love Rock 'N Roll: The Shadow Album", while Rainbow dig up archival material with the double LP "Rarities 75-76".
Among the most unusual items are also two collectible toys dedicated respectively to Iron Maiden's Eddie and Motörhead's Lemmy.
