Midge Ure: the Ultravox frontman in Italy for two summer dates

13-05-2025

Avant-gardists and melodicists, projected into the future yet prisoners of a romantically nostalgic spleen, Ultravox embodied one of the pivotal experiences of the entire new wave. Their futuristic, decadent sound, born from the pioneering electronics of Brian Eno and Kraftwerk, absorbed the scent of glam rock (David Bowie, Roxy Music) and the restlessness of punk, paving the way for the synth-pop era and the "new romantic" movements, of which they nonetheless remained the unmatched pinnacle. At the end of a glorious - and always disgracefully underrated - twenty-year career, Ultravox can boast of having ferried electronics into new wave, of having revived a melodic, symphonic art-rock worthy of progressive institutions like Genesis and King Crimson, and of having given voice to the existential anguish of a generation that never recognized itself in the hollow idols of the Eighties.
