Voci In Ascolto: the fourth edition in San Vito dei Normanni

03-05-2026

Voci in Ascolto, now in its fourth edition, returns to San Vito dei Normanni from May 28th to June 1st, 2026. Born in 2023 from the collaboration between Vincenzo Gagliani's World Music Academy and the namesake project conceived and led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Davide Ambrogio, the residency is part of the Nuova Generazione Trad programme, supported by the Ministry of Culture's Fondo Unico per lo Spettacolo.

Five days of workshops, talks and concerts devoted to oral-tradition singing: a moment of convergence and in-depth study built around the questions that guide Davide Ambrogio's work throughout the year, in the workshops held in Rome, Palermo, Padua and San Vito dei Normanni with the support of Giulia Prete.

The residency takes place mainly in the spaces of the Laboratorio Urbano ExFadda and the Tex, Il Teatro dell'Ex Fadda, two complementary venues that over the years have hosted much of WMA's activity in San Vito dei Normanni.

The training component of the residency is open to participants in this year's Voci in Ascolto workshops. Those who have attended the sessions at the various venues find in the residency the culmination of a shared journey: a setting for listening, singing and collective exchange, in which the choral repertoires learned during the year are put to the test over a longer, more intensive stretch of time.

The approach remains the same as in the workshops: oral, grounded in play, improvisation and the development of memory tied to sound and words, without scores or written lyrics. Each edition hosts artists and researchers in residence, with whom participants have the chance to work directly. This year's training sessions feature guests including Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Quartetto Anutis and Su Cuncordu Iscanesu (also headlining the concerts open to the public) and Giorgio Maltese, a multi-instrumentalist from Catania who has spent years researching and promoting Sicily's oral heritage.

The World Music Academy is offering two participation grants reserved for singers under 30, covering accommodation, meals and activities for the entire duration of the residency. Applications are open until May 10th, with sign-ups on the WMA website.

The residency also opens up to the public with three events. On May 29th, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino will bring to the Tex stage a concert that reinterprets tradition in a spectacular form capable of blending rhythmic energy, philological rigour and stage presence.

The evening of May 30th belongs instead to Quartetto Anutis and Su Cuncordu Iscanesu, at the Chiostro dei Domenicani: on one side an international all-female vocal quartet (Italy, Croatia, Portugal) formed around the works of Giovanna Marini and folk polyphonic traditions; on the other, one of Sardinia's longest-running choirs, founded in 1980 in Scano di Montiferro, custodian of a repertoire ranging from canti a ballu to liturgical compositions.

The residency closes on June 1st with the participants' final concert at the Tex, Il Teatro dell'Ex Fadda.
