While the release date of “Skin,” the second album from Australian producer Flume, remains shrouded in mystery, he's given us a few new pieces to build our expectations for the follow-up to his self-titled debut. Appearing on Annie Mac's “Live Lounge” on BBC Radio 1, Flume performed “Never Be Like You,” the first single off the album, alongside singer Kai, plus two previously unreleased tracks.
The first is a track never before aired on radio: so new, in fact, that Flume says he hasn't even settled on a title yet. But it's immediately clear the novelty lies in the music too: darker, noisier than usual, chaotic, glitchy. The skeletal, lopsided rhythm leaves plenty of room for a play of fractured, manipulated vocals and great washes of synth, which gradually intertwine to form a melody that's hard to shake off. This time Flume is joined by singer Kučka, who also features on the track closing the live session, alongside Kai. That one is likewise unreleased, though whether it will make it onto “Skin” is uncertain: a cover of Alessia Cara's “Here.”
The untitled track performance starts at 7 minutes 45 seconds, while “Here” kicks in at 17 minutes 30. You can listen to the full performance below.
