Eagles set record with "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975", reaching 40 million copies sold in the US

24-01-2026

“Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975” by the Eagles has surpassed 40 million copies sold in the United States, becoming the first album in history to reach this milestone. The achievement was certified by the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America, which awarded the record quadruple diamond status.

The best of compilation released in 1976 thus consolidates its absolute dominance of the US market, decisively outpacing the second most certified title of all time, “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, which stands at 34 million units. In third place is once again an Eagles album, “Hotel California“, with 28 million certified copies.

Released in February 1976, “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975” also holds a pivotal place in the history of the American record industry: it was in fact the first album to receive platinum certification, introduced by the RIAA that very year to mark sales of a million copies. The record spent five weeks at the top of the US chart, and in 2017 it was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry, reserved for works deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

Ahead of the fiftieth anniversary, on February 13th “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975” will return to stores in a new reissue on clear vinyl. And who knows, this might just be the right occasion to add a precious missing gem: none other than “Hotel California”.

In 2025 the Eagles also celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of another one of their classics, “One Of These Nights“, released on June 10, 1975 by Asylum. It's the American band's fourth studio album, at the time already fairly well-known thanks especially to the success of “Desperado” (1973), but still far from the commercial breakthrough that would come with these nine tracks and the following LP, “Hotel California”, a year later. “One Of These Nights” would become the first Eagles album to top the US charts (for 4 weeks), also earning a Grammy nomination for “Album Of The Year” and selling a total of four million copies. The three singles released from it, “One Of These Nights”, “Lyin’ Eyes” and “Take It To The Limit”, reached, respectively, No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 on the Billboard Top 100, becoming instant bestsellers.
