Billboard's ranking of the greatest dance songs of all time

Billboard, the bible of American charts, has taken on an ambitious mission: ranking the 100 greatest dance songs of all time. It's also an attempt to give overdue credit to a scene that's often undervalued within popular music. "The words 'dance music' – the magazine writes in its introduction – immediately conjure images of packed clubs, crowded festivals and nights spent dancing without pause. But that definition is also reductive: it lumps together, under a single label, an enormous range of sounds, styles and experiences that are all very different from one another. Dance is a genuine culture… Yes, it's about dancing, but it's about much more than that too. Ever since it emerged between the late Sixties and early Seventies, spurred on by advances in music technology, dance has been both an underground refuge and a mainstream phenomenon. It has absorbed influences from every genre, forging a language capable of crossing eras and continents. Even when it has seemed to drift away from the charts, it has kept evolving and shaping popular music. That's why," Billboard concludes, "this ranking brings together artists and songs that, at first glance, might seem worlds apart, but that share the genetic makeup of more than fifty years of dance music history."
