British classical music magazine Bbc Classical Music turns its attention to pop-rock once again, publishing its ranking of the 25 best albums of 1985. A year that, as the British publication points out, is often described as "a transitional year in rock history: a kind of middle ground between the last flickers of post-punk and new wave and the guitar-driven indie revival that would define the end of the decade. Looking more closely, however, 1985 turns out to be an extraordinarily rich, varied and creative year. Already-established artists pushed toward deeper, more personal territory, while new voices forged fresh sounds by blending noise, folk, electronics and pop... We hear bands perfecting ideas developed in the early Eighties and others completely tearing down their own formulas. From sweeping art-pop to lo-fi fury, from stadium-sized sophistication to the starkest emotional honesty, 1985 doesn't represent a pause, but a convergence. A year in which some of the era's best albums didn't just come out, but helped define the sound of the future", concludes Classical Music.
