The Calendar

September's most anticipated concerts: from Wilco to CSI

After the summer festival season, September relaunches the live music calendar with a particularly packed schedule. On the bill: major international rock comebacks, heavy metal veterans and pivotal names from the Italian scene, alongside plenty of pop, singer-songwriters, rap and electronic music. Milan remains the top destination for live music, joined by Rome, Bologna and a dense network of dates spread across the whole country.

From Carmen Consoli to Wilco: a packed September 1st

September opens with two very different shows. Carmen Consoli will bring "D come dannate ingenue" — a choral, all-female show in which music and words move through different eras, experiences and sensibilities — to the Castello Scaligero in Villafranca di Verona. The same evening, Wilco — already on stage at Rome's Auditorium on August 31st — will play at the Esedra di Palazzo Te in Mantua.
The following day it's the turn of the Hollywood Vampires, expected at the Castello Carrarese in Este with a show built around classics, hard-rock energy and tributes to great departed legends.
In the first days of the month the Marlene Kuntz will also return, with two dates, while C.S.I. Consorzio Suonatori Indipendenti will cross Italy with four shows of their long-awaited reunion, from Egnazia to Catania: one of the most significant tours for fans of Italian rock.

Judas Priest, Black Keys and the guitar comeback

Among the most eagerly awaited rock dates is the extended Italian run by Judas Priest, who will hit four cities with their catalogue of heavy metal classics. Milan, meanwhile, will host The Black Keys, set to pack out the Alcatraz with their raw blend of blues, garage and rock, along with the return of Bluvertigo at the Carroponte. The month will close out with Evanescence, headlining one of September's biggest rock shows at Bologna's Unipol Arena.

From Joji to LiSA: international pop comes through Milan

Milan confirms its central role on the pop front too. Joji brings his hazy world of alternative pop, electronica and R&B to the Unipol Forum, while LiSA, one of the biggest voices in J-Pop and anime music, arrives in Italy for the first time.
The bill also features Chilean singer-songwriter and rapper Akriila, the huge dance event headlined by David Guetta, and the immersive show by Anyma, built on the meeting of electronic music, technology and digital stage design. On the hip hop side, the biggest international draw will be A$AP Rocky.

Joji — September 3, Assago (Milan), Unipol Forum
David Guetta — September 6, Milan, Ippodromo SNAI San Siro
A$AP Rocky — September 10, Milan, Ippodromo SNAI San Siro

Caparezza, Mannarino, I Cani and Jovanotti

The Italian contingent is also very strong. Caparezza kicks things off on home turf in Puglia with a show at the Oversound Fest in Bari, followed by a date at the Reggia di Caserta. Mannarino, meanwhile, plays Catania and Milan, while I Cani arrive at Rome's Auditorium Parco della Musica for two dates.
The biggest Italian pop event of the month, though, belongs to Jovanotti, who wraps up his “Jova Summer Party” with two nights at the Circo Massimo. Milan answers on the same dates with Marracash and Guè, reunited once again to mark the tenth anniversary of “Santeria”, the 2016 album that became one of the landmark titles of Italian rap.

Caparezza — 4 settembre, Bari, Fiera del Levante; 5 settembre, Caserta, Reggia di Caserta
Mannarino — 5 settembre, Catania, Wave; 11 settembre, Milano, Parco della Musica

(Diamanda Galás)

Between pop and experimentation

The more adventurous end of the schedule offers three shows by Destroyer, Dan Bejar's project, capable of moving between art-rock, indie-pop and oblique songwriting. Even more radical will be the return of Diamanda Galás, with three dates devoted to her unmistakable vocal explorations, somewhere between avant-garde, theatre and experimentation.

Destroyer — 21 settembre, Bologna, Locomotiv; 22 settembre, Roma, Monk; 23 settembre, Milano, Arci Bellezza
Diamanda Galás — 23 settembre, Trento, Auditorium Santa Chiara; 26 settembre, Parma, Il Rumore del Lutto; 30 settembre, Senigallia, Teatro La Fenice

The last dates of the month

On September 21, the Arena di Verona will host a new edition of Una. Nessuna. Centomila, the collective concert against violence towards women, featuring performances, duets and collaborations between some of the leading names in Italian music. The initiative, conceived and promoted by Fiorella Mannoia alongside other major names in Italian music, returns to Verona after the great success of previous editions to raise funds for anti-violence support centres.
In the final days of the month, it will be the turn of Kid Yugi, who wraps up his summer tour with dates in Bari and Padua before stepping up to the scale of major arenas.

Una. Nessuna. Centomila — September 21, Verona, Arena di Verona
Kid Yugi — September 27, Bari; September 30, Padua
