OndaRock's '90s Charts

A musically multifaceted decade, born almost as a reaction to the synthetic overload of the one that preceded it, yet which paradoxically ended up paving the way for a rediscovery of the 80's through the revisiting of electronic, industrial and trip-hop music. We retrace the Nineties through OndaRock's staff chart, attempting an (impossible) synthesis of all its disparate genres: from the irresistible britpop of Blur, Pulp and Suede to the grunge of Nirvana, Soundgarden and the more heterodox Smashing Pumpkins; from the shoegaze of Anglo-Irish pioneers My Bloody Valentine to the gothic renaissance courtesy of Black Tape For A Blue Girl; from the dark-hued folk-rock of Black Heart Procession to the narcoleptic psych-rock of Mazzy Star; from the fertile Bristol workshop of trip-hop (Portishead, Massive Attack) to the post-rock revolution of Slint; from the industrial apocalypse of Nine Inch Nails to the Warp-brand electronics of Autechre and the French Touch sound of Air, all the way to the futuristic rock of Radiohead, who triumphed at number 1 with the epoch-defining "Ok Computer". All without forgetting the comebacks of giants of the stature of David Bowie, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Rem and U2.

The setlist is rounded out by three bonus tracks from Claudio Fabretti's personal chart, which bring back into the light two more crucial experiences of the decade (the oblique pop of Stereolab and the frontier desert-rock of Calexico), as well as a tribute to the spiritual testament of Fabrizio De André in "Anime salve".
