I Tindersticks sono i protagonisti della nuova puntata di Rock in Onda, il programma condotto da Claudio Fabretti tutti i mercoledì dalle 12 alle 14 sulle web-frequenze di Radio Città Aperta (www.radiocittaperta.it).

In bilico tra il pop orchestrale e il repertorio più noir di cantautori come Leonard Cohen e Nick Cave, i Tindersticks hanno percorso di traverso gli anni del britpop e del post-rock, inventando un nuovo genere: un pop orchestrale dalle sonorità maestose e funeree. Un percorso che si è intrecciato con una fase solista del loro leader, Stuart Staples, e con un’intensa collaborazione cinematografica con la regista Claire Denis.

In America era il periodo di esplosione del grunge; da questa parte dell’Atlantico il pop-rock di classica impronta britannica si stava trasformando in britpop e lo shoegaze regalava i suoi ultimi lasciti, mentre qualcuno di lì a poco avrebbe coniato il termine post-rock. Anni fervidi, i primi Nineties, forse gli ultimi nei quali potevano individuarsi “scene” e impostazioni stilistiche tra loro relativamente omogenee.

And yet, in that very period, it could happen that between a Nirvana track and one by the Stone Roses, something completely different would turn up on "alternative" radio: the work of a band as expansive as it was obscure, devoted to recasting the refined songwriting of Leonard Cohen in a sinister orchestral key, fused with the sickly atmospheres of Nick Cave and a latent spleen, steeped in a decadent spirit and intoxicated by the fumes of alcohol and tobacco.

To achieve such a mournfully elegant result required an instrumental setup capable of balancing orchestral romanticism, "indie" spirit and melodic sensibility, as well as a vibrant voice able to revive, with a personality all its own, the splendour of the aforementioned Leonard Cohen and the allure of the French chansonniers, chief among them Brel and Gainsbourg.

Il piccolo miracolo di riassumere tutti questi elementi in un’unica band è riuscito alla formazione di Nottingham, che ha rivelato il timbro da crooner di Stuart A. Staples e un gruppo di musicisti capaci di pennellare infinite sfumature di pop orchestrale lungo l’intero percorso di un’affascinante avventura musicale.

Alla fugacità delle mode alternative, agli eccessi e alla voglia di impressionare ad ogni costo, i Tindersticks oppongono la sobria ricercatezza di un chamber-pop fuori dal tempo e l’ordinarietà solo apparente di una fragile autenticità emozionale, che trova quanto mai compiuta rappresentazione nel loro viaggio romantico nei sotterranei dell’animo umano, tradotto in canzoni pervase sempre da grande classe, intensità e non comune senso della melodia. Un percorso affascinante che si è anche alternato a una fase solista di Stuart A. Staples e a brillanti incursioni cinematografiche, soprattutto al servizio della regista francese Claire Denis.
