The new episode of Rock in Onda, the show hosted by Claudio Fabretti on Radio Città Aperta (Fm 88.9 in Rome or streaming here), is entirely dedicated to Led Zeppelin.
While rumors of (unlikely) reunions periodically resurface, we retrace the long flight of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant & co.'s Dirigible. Along the routes of a sound that was as seemingly derivative as it was decisive for the subsequent evolution of "hard" rock. Incendiary live shows, hundreds of millions of records sold. And a legend that has endured for over forty years, impervious to fads and generational change.

Led Zeppelin will probably go down in history for a singular, hardly repeatable achievement: making a massive contribution to the evolution of rock music by inventing almost nothing, but rather drawing heavily first from the blues and rock-blues repertoire of the '50s and '60s, and later from folk and Eastern music. And yet theirs is a completely fresh, almost "revolutionary" sound, one that would leave indelible marks on the future of rock'n'roll. And this is precisely the greatness of Zeppelin, who managed to reach where other British bands before them had only attempted to go (such as the Yardbirds – in whose ranks Page himself had served – the Cream, the Jeff Beck Group – with whom John Paul Jones collaborated – the Kinks).
Led Zeppelin managed to create a unique, fundamental sound simply by dressing up in new clothes a music that was already starting to grow old. A formal revolution, based largely on sound, yet so massive that it also swept away substance, to the point of setting the tone for much of the hard rock that developed in the years to come, right up to the present day, where the Dirigible's shadow is still clearly visible over many bands.
