Their saga has explored a vast range of eras and settings, evolving into a meticulous study of European folk tradition, with a particular fondness for medieval and Renaissance themes (which kick-started the rich vein of ambient, chamber-leaning "gothic" music led by groups such as Black Tape For A Blue Girl), while on one hand rediscovering sacred music and on the other tribal music (laying new foundations for the revival of world music), always maintaining a rigorous stylistic consistency, and at the same time moving ever further away from the canons of rock music.
