It sounds like an extremely convenient definition, but it really is the most honest one possible: how else could you lump together the Supergrass of “Caught By The Fuzz”, offspring of the Rolling Stones and of the punk, with the Mansun of “Being A Girl”, a stone's throw from progressive rock? What connects the elementary music of Oasis to the layered, unhinged sound of the Super Furry Animals? Ogni band vantava uno stile collegabile a qualche corrente musicale che in quel momento era defunta o perlomeno scomparsa dalle prime pagine, e sembrava premurarsi di riportarla in auge grazie ai progressi tecnici avvenuti nel frattempo, un po’ come, alla fine degli anni Settanta, i Jam had done with mod and beat, the Stranglers with the Doors, the Pop Group with funk and dub, and so on. So Suede resurrected glam, Blur did the same with Kinksthe Kula Shaker with psychedelic rock, Divine Comedy with Scott Walker. As with post-punk, britpop's revisions and updates were substantial, to the point of generating independent and highly innovative aesthetics, impossible to mistake for their source material, even though that source remained clearly recognisable (and it couldn't have been otherwise, since part of the game was precisely to show the connection, with pride in belonging to the same culture).
