From Killers to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, from Soap&Skin to Bryan Ferry: the most interesting new releases

The Killers – “Bright Lights”

"Bright Lights", the new single from The Killers, is available on Italian radio from today. The track came out on August 9, 2024, accompanied by its official video.

The song, the band's press release explains, has the typical chorus of an anthem and a powerful melody destined to be sung together in stadiums. All four original members of the band, Brandon Flowers (vocals), Dave Keuning (guitar), Mark Stoermer (bass) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr (drums), appear on the track. Listen to it below:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – "GREY RUBBLE – GREEN SHOOTS"

An imminent return for Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The Canadian post-rock giants will release a new album on October 4, entirely dedicated to Palestine. "NO? TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28?.?340 DEAD" - that's the title - follows three years after the previous "G_d's Pee AT STATE'S END!". The title refers to the terrible conflict raging in the Gaza Strip: 28,340 is the number of Palestinians killed from the start of the recent conflict up to February 13, 2024. The first single to surface is "GREY RUBBLE – GREEN SHOOTS": listen to it below.

Kim Deal – "Crystal Breath"

Kim Deal of the Breeders has announced her debut solo album, "Nobody Loves You More", out September 22 via 4AD. According to a press release, Deal wrote and recorded two songs titled "Are You Mine?" and "Wish I Was" back in 2011. The album will feature notable collaborations, including former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, current bandmates Kelley Deal and Jim Macpherson, and former Pixies members Mando Lopez and Britt Walford. Soap&Skin – “Mistery Of Love”

A covers album is on the way from Soap&Skin. Titled "TORSO", it will be released on November 22 via Play It Again Sam. "Anja Plaschg, aka Soap&Skin," a press release notes, "has always had a special talent for reinterpreting songs with her own unique approach. When the Donau Festival invited her in 2022 to perform all the covers she had put together over the years, she came up with the idea for a permanent collection, which will now be released. Her previous albums 'Narrow' (2012) and 'From Gas To Solid / You Are My Friend' (2018) also featured covers without them being immediately recognized as such. Simply because it's nice to escape from myself, says Plaschg. She likes covers, quite literally as disguise and hiding place." Here is one of Anja Plaschg's covers, her take on Sufjan Stevens' "Mystery Of Love":

Bryan Ferry – "Star" (Ft: Amelia Barratt)

After the triumphant 50th-anniversary tour of Roxy Music in 2022 and a string of reissues spanning both the band's classic catalogue and his own solo work, Bryan Ferry returns with "Star", his first new song in ten years.

The track was made together with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, with vocal contributions from painter and writer Amelia Barratt, who duets with the British dandy. A dark, magnetic piece, in which the pair's whispers play off the hammering cadences of post-techno-inflected sounds. "'Star' is a collaboration with painter and writer Amelia Barratt," Bryan Ferry explained. "A couple of years ago I helped her record an audiobook here in my studio. I was really struck by her writing, and this is the first song we've made together. I'm very excited about this new work - there's much more to come." Watch the video for "Star":
