From John Cale to Pearl Jam: the most interesting new releases

John Cale – “How We See The Light”

John Cale has announced his new album “POPtical Illusions”, due out on June 14th via Double Six/Domino, and has shared the first single “How We See The Light”. Cale has described the record as “a deeply atmospheric collection about impending ruin and the redemptive power of art and community”, a fitting follow-up to the previous “Mercy” (2023) in terms of the anger and bitterness expressed through music. Cale comes across as angry at capitalists, at the destruction they wreak on the planet and on human decency, but already from this first taste it's clear he wants to experiment rather than simply deliver a “Mercy” part 2.

Gastr Del Sol – “Seasons Reverse”

The historic project of Jim O’Rourke and David Grubbs, Gastr Del Sol, have announced their first album in 26 years: it will be titled “We Have Dozen Of Titles” and will be released on May 24th via Drag City. Listen below to the first excerpt, “The Seasons Reverse”, a track recorded during the band's last live show in 1997:

Justice – “Saturnine”

As the release of the highly anticipated new album “Hyperdrama” draws near, set for April 26th via Ed Banger/Because Music (distributed by Virgin Music),  Justice have unveiled the new single “Saturnine (With Miguel)” and shared the tracklist. Stream the track below.

I Hate My Village – “Water Tanks”

Released on March 21st via Locomotiv Records, “Water Tanks” is the new single from the I Hate My Village project, the first preview of the new album expected out by this spring.

A track that confirms the compelling compositional flair of the supergroup made up of Adriano Viterbini (Bud Spencer Blues Explosion), Fabio Rondanini (Calibro 35, Afterhours), Marco Fasolo (Jennifer Gentle) and Alberto Ferrari (Verdena), as well as the decisive African influence running through their music.

Einstürzende Neubauten – “Ist Ist”

Einstürzende Neubauten have released a new single, “Ist Ist”, tribal and percussive in feel, which anticipates the upcoming full-length from Blixa Bargeld and co., “Rampen – apm: alien pop music”. In one of the videos made to accompany the track, Rudi Moser appears simulating the percussion of his instruments. Stream it below.

Pearl Jam – “Running”

New single from Pearl Jam – the second, following the title track – previewing the forthcoming album “Dark Matter”, due out on April 19. It's called “Running” and it's exactly that: a breathless sprint lasting just over 2 minutes. “It's one of the last songs we recorded at Shangri-La in Malibu,” explained the Seattle band's guitarist Stone Gossard, “and it was fun to pull out another uptempo track. Ed's vocal ability (Eddie Vedder, ed.) here and in a few other spots on the album is simply astonishing.”

Below you can watch the video for the new Pearl Jam song.
