“Piece of Mind”, the fourth album by Iron Maiden, released on May 16, 1983, sealed the rapid rise of the London band, soon to become a fixture on stages all over the world and transformed into a living legend in its own right. To celebrate that now-mythical record, a graphic novel has been created, gathering contributions from writers and artists of widely varied backgrounds, all left free to tell stories and give shape to the images that listening to "Piece Of Mind" sparked inside them.
Originally released for the fortieth anniversary of the album of the same name, the volume collects comics, illustrations and testimonials from internationally renowned writers, artists and musicians, who have translated into stories, lines and images what "Piece Of Mind" meant to each of them. The story is structured in nine chapters, each corresponding to a track from the album's original tracklist. Every chapter is the work of a different author, always paired with top-tier illustrators.
Bruce Dickinson, the man who put his voice on those songs, personally handled the story for the "Revelations" chapter, thus putting the band's seal of approval on the entire project and further raising its significance. Each artist involved renders their own "visions" with a personal, varied approach: from the dreamlike condemnation of war laid out in the chapter devoted to "Die With Your Boots On" to the unavoidable Lovecraftian subtext of "Still Life". Among the illustrators are also Italian artist Francesco Dossena and Danijel Žeželj, a name that has belonged to the graphic novel world's Olympus for at least two decades.
Rounding out the volume is an introduction penned by Rod Smallwood (Iron Maiden's longtime manager) along with heartfelt testimonials of affection and admiration from a host of well-known figures, from Lady Gaga to Michael Fassbender, from Simon Gallup of the Cure to Matt Bellamy of Muse, from Javier Bardem to rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy, down to many other "unsuspected" names. A special spot is reserved for Scott Ian, founding guitarist of Anthrax, who has shared many tours with Iron Maiden and is a close friend of the English band.
Here are Bruce Dickinson's words introducing this precious work: "When the idea of a graphic novel for the 40th anniversary of 'Piece Of Mind' came up, I felt it was the perfect medium to expand beyond the boundaries of the songs and to create new plots and new dimensions through storytelling and imagery. Working on the 'Revelations' chapter allowed me to add further layers and dimensions to the lyrics. Just as exciting was bringing together some of the best writers and illustrators in the business, all genuine fans of the band, to contribute their own ideas inspired by the songs, by Eddie and by the album itself. The publisher did an extraordinary job, putting all this together to create more than just a graphic novel. It's a true work of art."
A work that is now finally available in Italian translation as well, curated by Fabio Gamberini for publisher Silvery Quail.
