Ms John Soda

Covo, Bologna

We already knew that everything Micha Hacher touches turns to gold. That Thomas Morr is a guarantee of trust, too. The love we feel for both is by now inextinguishable, bomb-proof and immune to gossip. We'd been told that the new Acher & Bohm record was weak, and we'd had to agree: "Notes And The Like" remains a very small record, if we set aside a couple of lucky tracks. But we've stubbornly kept the faith in Berlin indietronica, and tonight's live show at the Covo gives us back the thrills of "NO P. Or D.", and above all of a strand that the more skeptical among us thought had already run dry.

The Ms John Soda project can't be compared to Lali Puna, just as "Notes And Like" is nothing like the excellent "Faking The Books". But live is another matter.

Already last year, at the Morr Music Label Night in Berlin, we'd noted the lady's grit, with her free-flowing synths and drum'n'bass nods. The Covo's stage isn't the Volksbühne's, and although we love the Covo dearly, we couldn't expect the same energy — yet the Germans didn't let us down.

A gorgeous show, in which gems like "Go Check" shine bright enough to get the large, warm crowd dancing. A reworking of tracks and beats played far more live, and therefore warmer, with drums hammering away at our hearts. "Unsleeping" was the triumph, and dancing along filled with sadness — Morr's favourite concoction — we figured, in the end, we don't really care that Ms. John Soda's latest record is a bit lackluster, if they can still whisk us away on the S Bahn on a night that's only just begun. Well done, our German friends.
