Tyler, the Creator is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer and fashion designer. Thanks to his unique and versatile style, he is considered one of the most influential figures in popular culture of his generation.
Tyler Gregory Okonma, known as Tyler, The Creator, was born in Los Angeles in 1991 and grew up between Hawthorne and Ladera Heights. The son of an African-American mother and a Nigerian father (whom he never met), he showed an unusual creative streak from a very young age: drawing imaginary album covers, inventing tracklists, playing piano by ear, and writing lyrics as early as age seven. In 2007 he founded the collective Odd Future, a catalyst for a new way of approaching alternative hip-hop — rougher, more ironic, provocative and visceral. Alongside Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy Beats and others, Tyler established himself as the charismatic leader of a rebellious generation.
His proper debut came in 2009 with the mixtape "Bastard", followed two years later by his first official album "Goblin", where Tyler's persona splits into an inner conflict between therapy and self-destruction. The impact is immediate: "Yonkers", with its obsessive beat and unsettling video, goes viral. But it's only the beginning of a much broader journey.
With "Wolf" (2013) and "Cherry Bomb" (2015), Tyler refines his style and expands it into more melodic territory, while still remaining faithful to a dense, distorted, aggressive production. But it's with "Flower Boy" (2017) that something changes for good. The album, more introspective, lyrical and polished, tackles themes like loneliness, depression and sexual identity with surprising maturity. Tyler also reveals himself as a refined producer, attentive to arrangement and composition.
In 2019, with "IGOR", comes definitive recognition: a conceptual soul-funk record on which Tyler sings almost more than he raps, telling the story of a love affair falling apart through vintage synths and elegant sampling. "IGOR" wins the Grammy for Best Rap Album, though Tyler himself will contest the category, feeling his music had become too cross-genre to be confined to the "urban" label.
Two years later, in 2021, he releases "Call Me If You Get Lost", a work that fuses the mixtape aesthetic of the 2000s with narratives of travel, luxury and vindication. Tyler returns to more technical, arrogant rapping, but frames it within a coherent structure, held together by DJ Drama's narrating voice. Once again, the acclaim is unanimous: "Call Me If You Get Lost" is celebrated as one of his most ambitious and complete works.
In 2024, once again upending expectations, Tyler releases "Chromakopia", a conceptual, intimate record, with his mother's voice serving as the connecting thread. It's a darker, more reflective work, marking a pause from the glamour of his previous records and a return to vulnerability.
But Tyler doesn't stop there, and in July 2025 he surprise-releases "Don't Tap The Glass", a short, nervy album explicitly dedicated to physical movement, dancing, and lightness. Ten tracks for just over twenty-eight minutes of music, steeped in funk, electro and syncopated grooves, with a playful, vividly colorful production that recalls the Neptunes, LL Cool J and early OutKast. The opening track, "Big Poe", features none other than Pharrell, a key figure in Tyler's sonic and visual aesthetic since his earliest days. Tracks like "Sugar On My Tongue", "Ring Ring Ring" and the title track "Don't Tap That Glass/Tweakin'" follow, all dominated by elastic basslines, club-ready beats and ironic or nonsensical lyrics.
From the very first listen, "Don't Tap The Glass" presents itself as a "vibes album", as Tyler himself called it: a record that shuns thematic depth in favor of celebrating rhythm, physicality, the present moment. It's music to escape — or perhaps to free oneself — from a hyper-controlled, surveilled world, as the title itself suggests. The video for "Stop Playing With Me", featuring cameos from LeBron James and the duo Clipse, underscores this spirit of displayed freedom and the desire for escape.
Tyler, The Creator is today much more than a rapper. He's a total artist: producer, fashion designer, entrepreneur (with his brand Golf Wang and the Golf le Fleur* line), director of his own videos, an obsessive curator of his own image. With every release he sheds his skin, but never loses control of his vision. In a music landscape that's often homogenized, he remains a restless outlier, capable of reinventing himself without ever losing his authenticity.
