Fat White Family are an English rock band, formed in 2011 in Peckham, south London, on the initiative of Lias Kaci Saoudi. Guitarist Saul Adamczewski had previously been the frontman of indie-pop band Metros, which also included Family bassist Joe Pancucci. Nathan Saoudi had previously played guitar alongside his older brother Lias in their earlier group, The Saoudis, before becoming the Fat White Family's keyboardist. Adam Harmer (guitar) had been a solo artist before joining the original six-piece line-up, which also included Dan Lyons on drums.
The English band released their debut album, "Champagne Holocaust", in 2013, on British label Trashmouth Records. A debut that didn't go unnoticed, being a musical proposition devoid of the conformism that pervades even the most extreme fringes of alternative music: like a flame lit over a pile of indeterminate refuse, a blaze of sensations that unsettle or caress the senses with no apparent logical resolution, yet tightly bound to the purest exponents of the psychedelic revolution such as Roky Erickson and Fugs. One of the most vivid manifestos of today's social and cultural precariousness.
Next came "Fat Whites/Taman Shud", a split EP with Taman Shud, on 11 December 2013. On 10 March 2014, Fat White Family released their first single, "Touch The Leather". Later that same year, the single "I Am Mark E Smith" came out (a reference to the singer of The Fall).
Their second album, "Songs For Our Mothers", was released in 2016 on the Without Consent label, driven by the single "Whitest Boy On The Beach", later chosen for the closing credits of the film "T2 Trainspotting" (2017), the sequel to Danny Boyle's 1996 cult film. The next Fat White Family single, "Breaking Into Aldi", was released on 16 August 2016. The songs the Brixton boys offer to their mothers, to paraphrase the title of this sophomore effort, are about as far removed as possible from the Mediterranean idea of a heartfelt dedication: across the album's ten tracks, Fat White Family once again descend into the depths of human horror. Where "Champagne Holocaust" dealt in paedophilia and rape, here we get abusive relationships, poverty, dictators and serial killers.
In 2014, post-punk/disco outfit Warmduscher was formed, with the Saoudi brothers and Adamczewski acting as occasional collaborators in the studio and live. Other Fat White Family members with a more consistent role in Warmduscher are Harmer, Everett and Romans-Hopcraft. In 2015, Adamczewski and Lias Saoudi also collaborated with Adrian Flanagan and Dean Honer of experimental band Eccentronic Research Council on their album "Johnny Rocket, Narcissist & Music Machine... I'm Your Biggest Fan". Following its release, the partnership solidified into a new band called Moonlandingz. In January 2017, Adamczewski formed the band Insecure Men with Sean Lennon (guitar), Ben Romans-Hopcraft (bass), Jack Everett (drums), Jon Catfish de Lorene (keyboards) and Alex White (saxophone).
On 19 April 2019, Fat White Family's third album, titled "Serfs Up!", was released on Domino Records. A record of great charm, bringing together all facets of the musicians' output, including those explored in their two side projects, The Moonlandingz and Insecure Men. All of it steeped in lush, rich sonorities, blending unprecedented forms of harmonic grandeur, lounge and exotica references, danceable rhythms brimming with funky groove, a glam verve and an electro-industrial tension reminiscent of Cabaret Voltaire/Suicide.
In 2022, a biography of the band was also published - "Ten Thousand Apologies: Fat White Family and the Miracle Of Failure" - co-written by Lias Saoudi and Adelle Stripe.
In 2023, a surprise new single from Fat White Family came out, titled "Religion For One".
