Spiritbox

Spiritbox, a Canadian quartet from Vancouver, have quickly established themselves as one of the most discussed and representative names on the contemporary metalcore scene, being linked to the emerging baddiecore phenomenon, which is also said to include chart-topping bands like Sleep Token and Bad Omens. The band, made up of charismatic frontwoman Courtney LaPlante on vocals, Mike Stringer on guitar (with whom LaPlante founded the band in 2017), Josh Gilbert on bass (who joined in 2022) and Zev Rose on drums (who became an official member in 2023), has earned renown thanks to a sound that fuses metalcore aggression with melodic openings, pop elements and a distinctive visual aesthetic. Courtney LaPlante, in particular, is regarded as a central figure for her ability to shift fluidly between ethereal clean vocals and brutal yelling, as well as for her stage presence and attention to image, both of which help define the group's identity in a genre that has traditionally been male-dominated.

Their sound, while still rooted in metalcore, stands out for its versatility and its ability to absorb a wide range of influences. The EP "Spiritbox" (2017) allowed them to start building a fanbase, later consolidated with their debut studio album, "Eternal Blue", released in 2021, which met with considerable acclaim. The follow-up "Tsunami Sea" further expanded and refined their musical approach, exploring sounds ranging from djent to cyber, with industrial touches, drum'n'bass-inflected passages, and nods to progressive trance and even goth-pop. This genre-blending approach, together with their ability to craft dense, intricate atmospheres alongside intense rhythms and striking vocal dynamics, makes Spiritbox a band capable of drawing in a wide audience well beyond metal's traditional boundaries.
