Having sprouted from a forgettable pop-rock band, Sophie Ellis-Bextor became a modern disco queen with the album "Read My Lips" (2001). The success wasn't repeated on subsequent albums, which wavered between pop, nu disco, house and bursts of more energetic electronica. By the time of her fifth album, she attempts a new, more auteur-driven direction with "Wanderlust" (2014), baroque and orchestral with a touch of eccentricity that winks at Eastern Europe. By contrast, "Familia" (2016) draws on subtle Latin American influences, while "Haha" (2023) looks to Japan. In 2025 she returns with an eighth album, "Perimenopop", which chronicles the approach of menopause across 12 eminently danceable tracks.
