Sofia Kourtesis (born August 18, 1985 in Magdalena, Lima, Peru) is a DJ, composer and record producer based in Berlin, Germany.
She released her debut EP, "This Is It", in 2014, followed by her self-titled second EP in 2019 and a four-track EP titled "Sarita Colonia" in 2020. The latter was followed by a five-track EP in 2021 called "Fresia Magdalena".
Kourtesis released a single titled "Estación Esperanza" with Manu Chao in 2022 and the single "Madres" in 2023. Both of these songs were included on her debut album, "Madres", released in October 2023 on the Ninja Tune label. Rich and passionate, aimed at highlighting the close bond that ties the producer to her Peru, "Madres" welcomes with moved tenderness, fights and celebrates with the same pride, and pulses with a love that the dense narrative subtext elevates to universal status, over a weave of rubbery beats, shifting rhythms and sugary sounds. Arriving at her first album with experience consolidated over time, Sofia Kourtesis is by now a fully formed artist, in command of a language shaped in every aspect.
The return with "Volver" (2025), inspired by the classic film of the same name by the great Pedro Almodóvar, continues along the path traced by its predecessor, presenting a small bouquet of tracks that draws strength from the multiplicity of its references, from a conceptual universe that understandably looks to Peru and its rich cultural heritage, but which above all else is born as a gesture of love, especially toward the trans community that has so greatly supported and inspired the producer's efforts. Because that's always where you return, to where the heart beats strongest. In this new kaleidoscope of rhythms and sensations, Kourtesis's rhythmic choices are always the main course on the menu, a riot of colors and energy that speak volumes about the producer's philosophy and wealth of inspirations. In this sense, the fire that animated the album burns with renewed strength in the moments when the tracks' expressiveness takes a markedly pop direction, striking with character and immediacy.
In 2026 she releases her contribution to the historic Dj-Kicks mix series, recounting the process of grieving her mother in a mix of refined and surprising house intensity.
